Sandra Anderson is back, and she's bringing the light all the way from The Himalayan Institute in PA to The Hidden Yoga Studio in Niwot this month with an awesome 2 day workshop:
Tales of Wisdom:
Classic Yoga Texts in Practice with Sandra Anderson
Join us for a playful exploration of quintessential sources for yoga, reinterpreted for modern life and practice. Explore selected stories from the Sri Mad Bhagavatam and the Durga Saptashati, and theory and practice from the Hatha Yoga Pradipika.
In the diverse canonical literature of yoga we meet shape-shifting gods, animals with divine powers, multi-armed, many-faced humans, and demonic forces that conquer heaven and earth. We're invited to ponder terrible, earth-shattering wars; and an ocean churned to spawn a fiery poison as well as the elixir of immortality. There are curses, boons, sacrifices, man-lions, enormous many-headed serpents, wish-fulfilling gems, and pleasure palaces. Are these stories merely entertaining--ancient versions of Star Wars and Harry Potter? Or are there hidden depths of meaning and revelation? What can we learn about how to conduct our yoga practice, heal our minds, and live meaningful and fulfilling lives?
We'll use recent studies of the mind and nervous system to help us understand the problems posed by the stories in these texts, and how yoga practice is designed to resolve internal conflicts and turmoil. Each session includes discussion and asana, pranayama, meditation and other practices drawn from these texts.
Saturday Morning Session (9:00-1:00)
Hatha Yoga Pradipika
The Hatha Yoga Pradipika is a tantric text focusing on asana, pranayama, and esoteric practices that work with the life force of the body. Along with the oral tradition, this text reveals the potential and the intention in working with prana shakti and the body. This session includes discussion and practice of asana, pranayama, bandhas, and specific practices drawn from the text.
Saturday Afternoon Session (2:30-5:30)
Churning the Ocean: An Allegory for the Spiritual Journey from the Srimad Bhagavatam
It turns out spiritual practice isn't always a smooth road, anymore than life itself. Explore how we must unite the forces of darkness and light to accomplish our deepest desire for bhoga (experiences) and apavarga (freedom). Learn how to churn the forces of light and dark in our own bodies, what stability really means, why it's so important, and how to find strength and balance in body, breath, and mind.
Enjoy discussion, breathing practices, and yoga meditation.
Sunday (9:00-2pm with hour lunch break)
Hatha Yoga Pradipika and Durga Saptashati: Mastering Our Inner Demons
Study and practice of the Hatha Yoga Pradipika continues with asana, mudras, pranayama, and a look at the more esoteric sections of this tantric text. Another tantric text, the Durga Saptashati, tells the story of the divine mother Durga, and how she defeats the blind forces of arrogant egoism, fear, greed, and anger to find fulfillment and freedom in our lives. Durga rules the navel center, the manipura chakra, pointing us in the direction of practices which awaken the full powers of self-mastery and integration of intelligence and instinct. Enjoy discussion, practices for the navel center, and meditation.
